Alaska Filipinos prep for Simbang Gabi Advent Masses

Simbang Gabi is a series of special Masses leading up to Christmas. The celebration of the nine-day novena of Masses is one of the longest-running and most popular Catholic Filipino religious traditions. At the Masses, the faithful especially focus on the Blessed Virgin Mary in the preparation for the birth of the Savior Jesus Christ.

In Anchorage, Simbang Gabi Masses will take place as scheduled: Dec. 15, 6 p.m., at Holy Family Cathedral; Dec. 16, 6 p.m., at St. Benedict Church; Dec. 17, 6:30 p.m., at St. Andrew Church; Dec. 18, 6:30 p.m., at Holy Spirit Center; Dec. 19, 6 p.m., at Holy Cross Church; Dec. 20, 5 p.m., at St. Patrick Church; Dec. 21, 6 p.m., at St. Anthony Church; Dec. 22, 6 p.m., at Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Attendees are invited to bring a favorite dish for the potluck dinner which will follow each Mass in Anchorage.

In Palmer, St. Michael Church will hold Simbang Gabi Masses as scheduled: Dec. 15-17, 6 p.m.; Dec. 18, 6:30 p.m.; Dec. 19, 6 p.m.; Dec. 20, 5:30 p.m.; Dec. 21-23, 6 p.m. A potluck dinner and social will follow the first and last Masses in Palmer.
