Rebecca Ostermann traveled to Anchorage last month to teach children how to sing liturgical chant during a three-day workshop at Holy Family Cathedral in Anchorage. The Aug. 13-15 “chant and organ camp” included instructing children, ages 6-18, in how to read chant notation as well as the practical aspects of breathing, positioning and voice projection. Several older students also learned the basics of how to play the organ for Mass. Ostermann, who teaches choral music and conducting at Kutztown University, is currently based in Philadelphia where she serves as the music director at the historic Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
She spoke to students about the fittingness of traditional chant and how it helps to musically define the sacred space of the church where Mass is celebrated.
About 40 children registered for the camp, coming from parishes across Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley. The event ended with children singing as a choir for the Aug. 15 Dominican rite Mass at Holy Family Cathedral.
