In an effort to promote Catholic education in Alaska, an Anchorage youth was awarded a scholarship for her winning essay on the theme: “Just be a blessing.”
The Catholic Daughters of the Americas court in Anchorage organizes the annual student essay scholarship.
During the award ceremony last month at Holy Rosary Academy a $500 award was given to Chiamaka Lebechi whose essay explored what virtues and qualities are needed during high school to be a blessing to others. Lebechi is a parishioner at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church and attends Lumen Christi High School where she will be in 9th grade next fall.
The annual scholarship is given with the intention of helping to foster and facilitate Catholic education.
Along with the student essays, judges took into consideration church and community activities and also required three letters of recommendation from a religious (priest, deacon, religious brother or sister), religion teacher and an adult outside the family.
According to the Catholic Daughters the scholarship winners are outstanding young Catholics and role models for their peers.
