The Catholic Anchor has launched a new website featuring a number of upgrades aimed at enhancing visitor navigation and interaction. The new website is compatible with all mobile devices, allowing easy access via smart phones, tablets and personal computers. Visitors will find an increased number of photos, displayed in a larger format. Additionally, readers will be able to comment on all articles, columns and editorials.
The Catholic Anchor earned seven awards for excellence in journalism at the annual competition sponsored by the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada (CPA).
The awards, for work published in 2013, were announced June 20 at the annual Catholic Media Convention in Charlotte, NC.
The Anchor, now in its 15th year of operation, consistently wins in secular and religious journalism competitions. This year’s seven awards are in addition to the three awards received earlier this year at the annual Alaska Press Association.
Alaskans have a new opportunity for adult faith formation via the internet as the state’s Catholic dioceses enter a partnership with The Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation (VLCFF) at the University of Dayton. Deacon Mick Fornelli has worked with the University of Dayton on the project, which offers adult religious education and faith formation online anytime and anywhere.
More than 400 Catholic school students have filled the hallways, classrooms and chapels of the five schools located in the Anchorage Archdiocese. With the start of the new academic year, educators are offering a variety of options to Alaskan parents seeking to provide their children a faith-based educational alternative to public schools.
Today this eminent Montessori approach is nurturing the faith of thousands of toddlers to tweens worldwide. Since its founding in 1954, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd has flourished in 37 countries and more than 1,250 locations in the U.S., including adapted versions in Episcopal and Orthodox settings. Yet in the Archdiocese of Anchorage, CGS subsists only as a little known gem within St. Patrick Church and on a limited basis at Holy Family Cathedral, both in Anchorage.

Religion and science are not opposed at Lumen Christi High School in Anchorage. The 7-12 grade Catholic school has built a reputation for innovative science curriculum, while also teaching the tenants of Catholic faith.
The school is hoping to further enhance its science program thanks to a $15,000 grant that teacher Debbie Brewer received earlier this year. Brewer was chosen to take part in a national program that forms mentoring partnerships between high school science teachers and research scientists.
Parents have different roles from their children. Teachers have different roles from firefighters. Mothers have different roles from fathers. And individually we also have different personalities that play important roles. But — and this is the important part — amidst our diversity there is an underlying unity that holds us together.
In an effort to promote Catholic education, three Anchorage youth were awarded scholarships for winning essays on the theme: “Jesus loves us; How do we spread that love?”
The Catholic Daughters of the Americas court in Anchorage organizes the annual student essay scholarship. This year the Daughters partnered with the Knights of Columbus council at Holy Family Cathedral, which allowed for an increased number of award winners.
Seminarian Brother Thomas Aquinas Pickett, 25, is in Anchorage for his one-year field assignment — a period of training that all Dominican student brothers complete as part of their eight-year formation for the priesthood. A graduate of Gonzaga University and Bishop White Seminary, Brother Pickett has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a passion for utilizing creative ways to spread the Gospel.
