Competing against news outlets from across Alaska, the Catholic Anchor won three awards at the annual Alaska Press Club’s statewide journalism competition.
Consisting of several hundred journalists and more than 60 media outlets from across the state, the Alaska Press Club is an independent professional organization that provides continuing education, recognition and information to reporters across Alaska.
The Catholic Anchor continued its long tradition of being honored at the annual journalism conference.
In the “Best General News” category, Mindy Goorchenko took first place for an article titled “Alaskans weigh impact of Boy Scouts policy on gay members.” Judges praised the article for its “great exploration of all angles involving the Boy Scouts of America changing its guidelines.”
Competing against television, radio and all size newspapers across the state, Mario Bird earned a 2nd place award in the category of “Best Alaska Outdoor Story” for his article titled, “Catholic dad fights bear to save family.”
The story details, blow-by-blow, how a father fought off a bear to save his family. Judges said: “Of the two articles written about this attack, this was far superior. Well done.”
In the category, “Best Reporting on Health or Science,” Anchor writer Mary Lochner won third place for her article titled, “Catholic chaplains bring spiritual healing to dying, sick,” which profiled two African priests who serve at Providence Alaska Medical Center. Judges praised the “memorable portraits of some interesting chaplains.”
