For the children we serve experiencing homelessness, it can be a dreaded time of year. They may worry about not being able to attend their same school because they moved into an emergency shelter or a different relative’s house over the summer.
Alaska has the highest number of veterans per capita of any state in the union. It is a tragedy to see that veterans experience homelessness at a higher rate than the general population across the country.
On June 20 we celebrate World Refugee Day across the globe. This year’s theme is “Standing With Refugees.” People living as refugees are like any of us, and could, but for the grace of God, be any one of us.
At Catholic Social Services (CSS) we serve so many mothers who need help as they raise and support their families. These families and children are the future of our community and we strive to support and strengthen them.
Offering daily health care services at the shelter will improve our health care and emergency services systems across Anchorage. This partnership between Catholic Social Services and Southcentral Foundation will improve the lives of many people. Bold actions, based on evidence and science, must be taken if we are going to make a difference in our world.
Lent is upon us, and I have been inspired by the words of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in which they call us during this time to devote ourselves to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy that “remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit.”
There is a new, groundbreaking partnership between Catholic Social Services and hospitals and health care providers in Anchorage, formed with the goals of improving health for the homeless, taking pressure off our health care and emergency services systems, and getting people into permanent housing.
Safe housing is one of the most basic needs of all people. We are an integral part of addressing homelessness in Anchorage. We provide the most emergency shelter beds in the city and we have a large cadre of case managers working diligently to move individuals and families into permanent housing.
Christmas is fast approaching and as we prepare to celebrate this joyful holiday, we are also rejoicing in the installation of our new archbishop. Catholic Social Services welcomes Archbishop Paul Etienne to Anchorage and we look forward to working with him. We also celebrate our work and cherished partnership with Archbishop Emeritus Roger Schwietz.
