Long-serving religious sister dies in Alaska
Little Sister of Jesus, Marie Josephe Brin, passed away peacefully on April 15. She is one of the Little Sisters of Jesus, known as Sr. Mary Jo. The funeral is planned for Friday, April 21, at 4:30 p.m. at St. Anthony Church in Anchorage.
Pro-life walk through streets of Anchorage set for April 22
Alaskans are preparing for an April “Walk for Life” through the streets of downtown Anchorage.
Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and Alaska Right to Life, the Saturday, April 22, event will begin at 12 p.m. at the pro-life memorial in the Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery (at the corner of 9th Ave. and Cordova St.). From there participants will walk to the St. John Paul II Memorial site on the Delaney Park Strip.

The Catholic Church in Alaska and around the world is in the midst of the most holy week of the year. With the start of Holy Thursday the church entered the Easter Triduum, the three days marking Christ’s Last Supper with the Twelve Apostles, his crucifixion and glorious resurrection.

The Easter Vigil, which takes place on the evening of Holy Saturday, April 15, is the high point of the passion and resurrection of Jesus. With a rich display of symbols, rites and readings, the church in worship expresses her faith in the mystery that brings her into being.

Good Friday Veneration of the Cross
During the veneration, a priest or deacon holds a wooden crucifix while the faithful process to him at the foot of the sanctuary, as if to receive communion. There each person reverences the crucifix with a kiss or a bow.
Hundreds of Alaskans to trace Christ’s Passion through streets of Anchorage
Hundreds of faithful will take part in the annual Good Friday Faith Walk on April 14. The outdoor devotion will begin at various points across Anchorage with groups walking and praying the 14 Stations of the Cross. As they wind through city streets, the participants will meditate on the steps Jesus Christ took through his Passion and death on the very first Good Friday.
Holy Thursday reverberates through the Catholic Church today
Except for the resurrection on Easter, Holy Thursday is possibly one of the most important, complex, and profound days of celebration in the Catholic Church. Holy Thursday celebrates the institution of the Eucharist as the true body and blood of Jesus Christ and the institution of the sacrament of the priesthood.
Sanctioning suicide runs contrary to Alaskan values
Under the guise of compassion, a physician assisted suicide bill (House Bill 54) has been filed by Representative Harriet Drummond in the Alaska Legislature. This so-called “Right to Die” bill is nothing less than state sponsored homicide. Homicide is the killing of one human being by another.
