Metropolitan cross a sign of archbishop’s presence
Anchorage Archbishop Roger Schwietz presided over the Dec. 8 Immaculate Conception Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Anchorage. During the morning liturgy he formally blessed the new metropolitan cross which is now used at all Masses that the archbishop celebrates at the newly elevated co-cathedral church.

Anchorage to establish co-cathedral
In an effort to better serve the needs of a growing Catholic population, Anchorage Archbishop Roger Schwietz has decided to establish Our Lady of Guadalupe Church as the co-cathedral for the Anchorage Archdiocese. This will officially occur during a special Mass on Dec. 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Holy Family Cathedral will continue as the “historic cathedral” and should always be considered to be the “primary church of the archdiocese,” Archbishop Schwietz told the Catholic Anchor.

The debate in favor of legalization has largely been framed in the language of personal freedom. Our personal freedom exists in the context of the communities to which we belong. As Catholics, we believe we have a responsibility to one another and to the wider community. Personal freedom that is not balanced by sensible regulation for the common good destroys the communities that are the guarantors of our personal freedom.

TONIGHT: Abp. Schwietz to speak on his future retirement
On Tuesday, Sept. 30, Theology and Brew in Anchorage will host a public presentation by Anchorage Archbishop Roger Schwietz. The talk will address the future of the archdiocese as Archbishop Schwietz is now less than 10 months from turning 75, the mandatory age at which all bishops must submit their resignation papers to the pope.
Archbishop Schwietz reflects on approaching retirement age

Combined Archbishop Schwietz oversees a geographic area that spans 550,000 square miles, or more than twice the size of Texas. Despite his added duties and frequent flights to small villages across Alaska, Archbishop Schwietz is now less than a year away from his 75th birthday. On July 3, 2015, he will reach the age at which all bishops must submit their resignation letter to the pope.
