The North Star Catholic
Saint Benedict Parish was founded in 1966 and is located in southwest Anchorage. We are a parish of 640 families who are very active in our faith and our community. We are a home for large and well-established Samoan and Filipino communities. If there were only one word to describe Saint Benedict and Lumen Christi School, it would be “Family.” We are a warm, welcoming, and inclusive place to worship and learn. We celebrate everything and everyone’s accomplishments.
Though ministries have been adjusted due to COVID, our parishioners serve the community through our food outreach pantry, delivering to those in need. Through our Knights of Columbus food drives to help the larger Anchorage community, we provide meals to families blessed with new children. We have an active Super Sunday Faith Formation program that serves all ages and Eucharistic Adoration, Bible Study, Catholic Book Club, a men’s Esto Vir group, Junior High, Youth, and Young Adult ministry. We have a very active Knights of Columbus involved in every aspect of our parish as well as work and maintenance projects at St Theresa’s Camp, Habitat for Humanity. Our parishioners help with everything from liturgical ministries to groundskeeping and gardening. We have social groups that gather to play pinochle, monthly pancake breakfasts, a bowling league and homeschool parents who bring their young children together for regular playtime each week.
The largest ministry of our parish is Lumen Christi School, which joined us in 2001. The school serves grades 7 – 12 and is celebrating 25 years serving the community. A well-known fundraiser for the school is the Archangel Attic Thrift Store. Staffed by volunteers, donations and customers come from all over the community. Our students come from many of the Anchorage and Eagle River parishes, including students of other faiths. We offer bus service to Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton and Eagle River. Our students participate in many service projects, retreats and social events throughout the year.
