Gaming tourney to aid WYD pilgrims
A gaming convention is in the works to help raise funds for youth from St. Benedict Church in Anchorage to attend the 2016 World Youth Day gathering with Pope Francis in Krakow, Poland. The Aug. 30-31 gaming event will take place at Lumen Christi High School and is scheduled to include a wide variety of games and sponsored events. American Heritage Girls — an explicitly Christian scouting organization with Alaska troops in Eagle River, Glennallen and Dillingham, has just recently launched a new troop at St. Michael Church in Palmer. Farmer’s market supports Alaska refugees
In an effort to support incoming refugees Catholic Social Services is again coordinating a project that allows refugees to grow small crops to sell at the local farmer’s market. The Fresh International Gardens booth will be at the Anchorage Market & Festival farmer’s market on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The market is located downtown on 3rd Ave. and East Street.
Alaska Catholic school athlete drafted by the Reds
A Catholic school student from Fairbanks was drafted into Major League Baseball after the Cincinnati Reds chose Monroe Catholic High School baseball star Scooter Bynum with the 545th pick on June 7.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported that the Reds chose the 2014 graduate in the 18th round.
“It felt fantastic,” Bynum told the News-Miner by cellphone from Colorado. “I was excited.”
“I’m still amped up about it,” he added.
Bynum is the third Interior player to be drafted in the last 10 years.
“It’s pretty exciting,” Monroe Catholic head baseball coach Dan Clarke said.
“He’s got a lot of natural talent,” Clarke added. “The more experience he gets, the better he’ll become.”
Catholic student club seeks new members at UAA
The Cardinal Newman Club at the University of Anchorage, Alaska is a campus group for local college students. The club holds meetings every second Saturday at 7 p.m. in the UAA Student Union, Lyla Richards Room. The club is also open to high school seniors who wish to get a head start on meeting fellow Catholic students at UAA.
