Alaska parishes to join in National Day of Prayer for peace
Catholic parishes across the Anchorage Archdiocese plan to take part in one hour of adoration before the Blessed Sacrament as part of the National Day of Prayer on Sept. 9. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops called for the prayer day after a number of shootings have caused racial tensions and violence around the country.

Alaskans urged to help flood victims in Baton Rouge
In an effort to assist those in the Baton Rouge area who are suffering from flooding caused by torrential rain last month, Anchorage Archbishop Roger Schwietz has requested that the following message by Robert Tasman be posted on the Catholic Anchor. Tasman is executive director of Louisiana Catholic Conference. He sent this message to dioceses across the United States, seeking assistance:
Fr. Shields to speak on ‘How to pass on vibrant faith to youth’
Catholic young people are falling away from the faith at a staggering rate as families and relatives struggle with how best to respond. Catholics United for the Faith in Anchorage invites the public to an evening with Father Michael Shields.
Papal chair now part of Alaska shrine
The former presider’s chair (cathedra) at Our Lady of Guadalupe Co-Cathedral in Anchorage now sits in the church’s narthex as a shrine to Saint Pope John Paul II who once used the chair during his historic 1981 visit to Anchorage.
