The hike is open to priests, fathers and men who are Catholic, as well as those who are considering Catholicism or those who simply want to strengthen their commitment to fatherhood and family, Deering explained. The trek is not meant to be a “fathers and sons” hike, but intended to challenge adults physically and spiritually.
Eagle Eye Alaska is an innovative annual hike and retreat that takes young adults into Alaska’s backcountry in an effort to inspire and reconnect them to the practices, sacraments and prayers of the Catholic faith. The upcoming Eagle Eye retreat, for ages 20-35, takes place July 10-19. The yearly trek includes priests and religious from the Community of St. John who attend the backpacking trip and provide formation throughout the weeklong retreat.
In response to the thoughtful article from the April issue regarding the question of cell phones at Mass, I offer the following question: Couldn’t all the benefits of accessing the net during Holy Mass be gained simply by looking up the readings before Mass begins?

Competing against news outlets from across Alaska, the Catholic Anchor took home three awards from the Alaska Press Club’s statewide journalism competition, which took place in Anchorage in late April. Consisting of several hundred journalists and more than 60 media outlets, the Alaska Press Club is a professional organization that provides education, recognition and information to Alaska’s reporters, editors and publishers. The Catholic Anchor — the only faith-based newspaper among the Alaska Press Club members — continued its long tradition of being honored at the annual conference.
The second season of St. Therese’s Camp in the Mat-Su Valley begins June 28. The Catholic summer camp, located outside of Wasilla, offers four weeklong programs on a forested 57-acre lakeside campus. According to the camp website, programming for children ages 8-14 includes “swimming, kayaking, canoeing, singing, campfires, archery, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, arts and crafts and outdoor skills training.”
