I learned respect for life from my family. My parents cared for our family, but their care and actions to protect and nurture life extended well beyond the immediate family. The practice of their faith, attendance at Mass, life within their parish, and outreach to the poor taught us the necessity of caring for the least – the most vulnerable – of Christ’s brothers and sisters.
On my first day at Catholic school, the first lesson was to write the initials J.M.J. at the top of all our papers. The initials represented Jesus, Mary, and Joseph – the Holy Family. This was a reminder to us that the Holy Family teaches us many lessons, and one of the most important is to respect every human life at every stage and in every circumstance.
The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her, “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus” (Lk 1:31). Mary responded with her fiat, “May it be done to me according to your word” (Lk 1:38). When Mary learned from the angel that her relative Elizabeth had conceived a son in her old age, she traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah to visit Elizabeth, while pregnant herself. In accepting God’s will for her and serving Elizabeth, our Blessed Mother teaches us to welcome the gift of new life and care for and support expectant mothers.
Saint Joseph created the environment in which the Holy Family lived, and he protected both Jesus and our Blessed Mother. Obeying God, he protected Mary by taking her as his wife, escorted his pregnant wife to Bethlehem, found shelter for her at the time of Christ’s birth, welcomed shepherds and the Magi to honor the newborn Jesus, trekked them to Egypt to protect Jesus from the slaughter of the innocents, and provided a home and sustenance for his family in Nazareth. Through his actions, Saint Joseph shows us how to respect life and live in obedience to God.
Jesus’ love and care for the least of his brothers and sisters is evident throughout the Gospels. In the teaching of the Judgment of the Nations, Jesus says, “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Mt 25:40), and during the blessing of the children, Jesus commands, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Mt 19:14). This last reference starkly reminds us that the kingdom of heaven belongs to children, and that we have the responsibility to care for children from the moment of their conception.
Everyone must respect and be thankful for the gift of life because God gives it. No one may take away that God-given gift, and the dignity that comes from being created in the image and likeness of God. As we prepare for Advent, which begins at the end of this month, let us continue reflecting on the many lessons of love, care, obedience, and respect for human life we can learn from the Holy Family.
