Anchorage Archbishop Roger Schwietz presided over the Dec. 8 Immaculate Conception Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Anchorage. During the morning liturgy he formally blessed the new metropolitan cross which is now used at all Masses that the archbishop celebrates at the newly elevated co-cathedral church.

The new cross was constructed in advance of the Dec. 12 Mass during which Our Lady of Guadalupe was formally elevated to a co-cathedral for the Anchorage Archdiocese.

The metropolitan cross, precedes the archbishop when he enters the sanctuary to celebrate Mass. Metropolitan crosses differ from a standard processional crosses in that they signify that the church is of the status of a cathedral, under the local bishop’s care.

The Anchorage Archdiocese now has two cathedrals. The historic cathedral remains Holy Family Cathedral in downtown Anchorage, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2015.
