The following events and liturgies are scheduled during Advent and Christmas in the Archdiocese of Anchorage.
Handel’s “Messiah” concert
The annual Community Chorus presentation of George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah” takes place Sunday, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m. at West High School. The chorus is comprised of singers from around Anchorage. Anchorage children plan to meet Saint Nicholas on Dec. 4
On Sunday, Dec. 4, Anchorage children will gather at St. Nicholas of Myra Byzantine Catholic Church with hopes of spotting Saint Nicholas, the third century bishop of Myra and the inspiration behind much of the Christmas gift-giving tradition. The public is welcome to join in as the parish celebrates its patron saint with a Divine Liturgy followed by singing, dancing, gift exchanges, skits and a potluck feast.
The feast day will begin with Liturgy at 10 a.m. Following the liturgy, the festivities will begin. Saint Nicholas is expected to come and accept gifts from the children, listen to their Christmas wishes and give them a small treat. Children are asked to bring gifts of warm clothes for Catholic Social Services’ Clare House — an outreach that serves homeless mothers and children.

Kodiak parish to host ‘Cookies by the Pound’
Kodiak’s Catholic parish features its “Cookies By the Pound” annual fundraiser, on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Approximately 60 families each donate six dozen homemade cookies, which are then sold by the pound. This year’s offerings include fudge and gluten free options. For more information, contact the school at 486-5411.
Holy Family’s Saint Nicholas party
On Saturday, Dec. 3, Holy Family Cathedral will celebrate its St. Nicholas Party in the parish hall beginning at 10 a.m. The event will include stories, crafts and breakfast. Christmas show set for St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School

Mat-Su Catholic school to hold Christmas show
The public is invited to Our Lady of the Valley Catholic School’s Christmas show & reception on Dec. 15. The event will begin at 6 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Wasilla.
Simbang Gabi Masses in Mat-Su, Anchorage
Simbang Gabi is a series of special Masses leading up to Christmas. The celebration of the nine-day novena of Masses is one of the longest-running and most popular Catholic Filipino religious traditions. At the Masses, the faithful especially focus on the Blessed Virgin Mary in the preparation for the birth of the Savior Jesus Christ.

Night of Prayer for Life Dec. 8
The annual National Night of Prayer for Life takes place on Thursday, Dec. 8, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Co-Cathedral. All are welcome to attend and pray, through the intercession of the Mother of God, for the establishment of a “culture of life” and the protection of the unborn. The event takes place at churches around the country on the feast of the Immaculate Conception. At Our Lady of Guadalupe, it begins with the feast day Mass at 7 p.m. Then from 8 p.m. to midnight, there will be special prayers for life, hymns, silent meditation and eucharistic adoration. From 8 to 9 p.m., the group will pray in union with fellow Christians praying at the same time across the United States for the pro-life intentions. Advent concert at St. Patrick’s
