Anchorage group tackles challenges facing Catholic parents

In an effort to equip parents with the tools to tackle difficult issues related to bringing up faith-filled Catholic children, St. Benedict Church is hosting its second installation of the “Catholic Parenting Discussion Group.”

Launched last year, the gatherings are hosted by Liz Loeffler, campus minister and teacher at Lumen Christi High School, and Bob McMorrow, director of evangelization and catechesis at St. Benedict’s.

This year’s gatherings launched Oct. 16 with a discussion titled, “Keeping your kids Catholic.” Coming November 13 will be a talk titled, “Addiction: Alcohol and Drugs. Other talks include presentations on chastity, responding to gender identity, getting teens to talk, authentic friendship and the proper use of social media. The gatherings run 4-5:45 p.m. in Lumen Christi High School.

“There are many issues that parents are facing in today’s world,” McMorrow explained in an email to the Catholic Anchor. “The primary goal is to support parents as they help their kids become holy young people, saints of the new millennium.”

The format is usually a facilitated discussion on the topic. Sometimes the gatherings feature guest presenters, or an article to read before coming.

“Most parents come because all the tough issues of parenting drive people to find a support group so they know they are not alone,” McMorrow observed. “Any parent who is interested in the topic is welcome.”
