Today we celebrate the dedication of our new church and the sacrament of Confirmation.

Our Confirmandi have dedicated significant time and effort to prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation. Similarly, all of you have prepared diligently to dedicate this new church, which has risen from the ashes of its original foundation.

Three years ago, a fire erupted, engulfing our beloved parish church. This tragedy deeply affected the members of the parish and the entire Petersburg community.

We are truly grateful to this amazing community, including the Christian leaders and members of various denominations who have offered us spaces to worship, a home for our priest, and the incredible generosity of so many people. We appreciate every one of you. Thank you!

Why do we build churches? What motivates us to invest our time, effort, and money into constructing a building? Why not worship God outdoors, in a field, by a waterfall, at a beach, or near a lake, surrounded by creation?

We build churches to provide a reverent space for God to dwell among us. These sacred places, created by our own hands reflect our hard work and sacrifice. They serve as a gift to God and a sanctuary for our worship.

I now consecrate the altar, which is the most important element in the church, by anointing it with sacred chrism. The people of God gather around the altar to celebrate the Eucharist and fulfill Jesus’ command at the Last Supper: “Do this in memory of me.”

The priests anoint the walls of the church. And we bless the tabernacle. The Blessed Sacrament, the Real Presence of Jesus, made present on the altar during our celebrations of the Eucharist, is now reserved in the tabernacle for the dying, the sick, and adoration.

Sacred chrism, which is used to anoint the altar and the walls of the church, is the same oil I use to anoint the Confirmandi, who are living stones and temples of God, sealing them with the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Hoy celebramos la dedicación de nuestra nueva iglesia y el sacramento de la Confirmación.

Nuestros confirmandos han dedicado mucho tiempo y esfuerzo a prepararse para el sacramento de la Confirmación. Del mismo modo, todos ustedes se han preparado diligentemente para dedicar esta nueva iglesia, que ha renacido de las cenizas de su estructura original.

Hace tres años, se desató un incendio que consumió nuestra querida iglesia parroquial. Esta tragedia afectó profundamente a los miembros de la parroquia y a toda la comunidad de Petersburg.

Estamos verdaderamente agradecidos con esta comunidad maravillosa, incluidos los líderes cristianos y miembros de diversas denominaciones que nos ofrecieron espacios para el culto y un hogar para nuestro sacerdote, así como con tantas personas por su increíble generosidad. Valoramos a cada uno de ustedes. ¡Gracias!

¿Por qué construimos iglesias? ¿Qué nos motiva a invertir nuestro tiempo, esfuerzo y dinero en la construcción de un edificio? ¿Por qué no adorar a Dios al aire libre, en un campo, junto a una cascada, en la playa o cerca de un lago, rodeados por la creación?

Construimos iglesias para ofrecer un espacio de reverencia donde Dios pueda habitar entre nosotros. Estos lugares sagrados, creados por nuestras propias manos, reflejan nuestro arduo trabajo y sacrificio. Sirven como un regalo para Dios y como un santuario para nuestra adoración.

Ahora consagro el altar —el elemento más importante de la iglesia— ungiéndolo con el santo crisma. El pueblo de Dios se reúne en torno al altar para celebrar la Eucaristía y cumplir el mandato de Jesús en la Última Cena: «Hagan esto en memoria mía».

Los sacerdotes ungen las paredes de la iglesia. Y bendecimos el sagrario. El Santísimo Sacramento —la presencia real de Jesús, hecha presente en el altar durante nuestras celebraciones eucarísticas— queda ahora reservado en el sagrario para los moribundos, los enfermos y la adoración.

El santo crisma, utilizado para ungir el altar y las paredes de la iglesia, es el mismo óleo que empleo para ungir a los confirmandos —quienes son piedras vivas y templos de Dios—, sellándolos con el don del Espíritu Santo.

Que todos los santos los bendigan en el día de su confirmación. Y bendiciones para todos al celebrar la dedicación de la iglesia de Santa Catalina de Siena.
