Alaska World Youth Day pilgrims urged to register early to save spot

In less than a year, a group of Alaskans will head to Kraków, Poland with millions of youth from around the world for the World Youth Day gathering with Pope Francis.

According to local organizers, those intending to make the pilgrimage need to register soon in order to guarantee a spot.

“Normally we have a large number of pilgrims register the fall before the pilgrimage,” said Bob McMorrow, who has organized multiple World Youth Day pilgrimages for the Anchorage Archdiocese. “This year our travel company is pushing us to finalize registrations sooner.”

According to McMorrow there are a few guaranteed spaces left but they are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“After these spaces are filled, we will need to go to the tour company for each request and see if they can acquire space,” McMorrow explained. “Once the tour company is no longer able to acquire space, then we will start a waiting list in case any of our pilgrims end up canceling.”

Those interested in attending the July 25 to Aug. 1, 2016 gathering can learn more about the trip at an informational meeting on Oct. 4, 3 p.m., at St. Benedict Church (in the Youth Center) in Anchorage.
