Competing against secular news outlets from across Alaska, the Catholic Anchor was awarded third place for “Best Editorial,” a division that included both large and small outlets together.
The award was given as part of the annual Alaska Press Club’s statewide journalism competition. Consisting of several hundred journalists and more than 60 media outlets from across the state, the Alaska Press Club is an independent professional organization that provides continuing education, recognition and information to reporters across Alaska.
The only faith-based news outlet in the Alaska Press Club, the Catholic Anchor nevertheless continued its long tradition of being honored at the annual journalism conference.
Editor Joel Davidson wrote the winning editorial, “Safe-sex ideology does not protect Alaskan women.” It explores the dangers of a University of Alaska’s program that promotes “safe sex” as a way to respect and honor women.
Speaking of the editorial, Judges said: “Agree or not, it makes its case well on a complex and challenging subject.”
