On Saturday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m., the 14th annual Anchorage Interdenominational Prayer Service marking the anniversary of Roe v. Wade takes place at the Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery on 9th Street and Cordova.
The event marks the anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in the U.S. Under Roe and its companion case, Doe v. Bolton, abortion is legal through the ninth month of pregnancy for virtually whatever reason.
The program for the upcoming prayer service includes the reading of a letter from newly elected Alaska Governor Bill Walker by one of his representatives.
Additionally, religious leaders and pro-life advocates will speak and offer prayers. Speakers include: State Senator Cathy Giessel; Father Leo Walsh, pastor of St. Benedict Church; Community Pregnancy Center Director Bill Donovan; Catholic Men for Life leader Mario Bird; Alaska Right to Life President Robert Koruna; Catholic Daughters of the Americas Regent Mary Rapp; youth representative Katherine Kurka; Knights of Columbus State Pro-life Couple James and Ann Curro; and closing remarks by Joy Christian Center Pastor Marlan Schoenleben.
All are invited to attend the service and pray for those wounded by abortion. The gathering lasts approximately 40 minutes with refreshments served afterwards.
