Holy Rosary Academy’s first season offering wrestling proved a success when freshman Michael Lucas won the state title in the 132-lb division of the Class 1-2-3A state wrestling championships in December.

In an 8-2 decision, Lucas defeated Cody Greene of Valdez to finish the season with a 35-3 win-loss record.

Lucas was one of three boys on the Holy Rosary team and the only state qualifier.
According to a report from the Alaska Dispatch, winning the state title was his goal all season.

“I always try to think positive,” he said, adding that his goal is four state titles in four years.

Holy Rosary Principal Catherine Neumayr had high praise for the school’s wrestling champ.

“He went from being unknown on the high school circuit, to winning his weight class as a freshman — defeating seasoned seniors to become the state champ,” she told the Catholic Anchor. “He had an amazing season!”
