Hundreds of Alaskans rally to defund Planned Parenthood

On Aug. 22, hundreds of pro-life advocates in Alaska joined tens of thousands from around the nation in praying and fasting to end abortion and the public funding of the largest provider of abortions in America — Planned Parenthood.

Local gatherings in Fairbanks and Anchorage were part of a nation-wide effort in more than 300 cities to pray and protest outside Planned Parenthood clinics following the release of undercover videos showing the abortion giant harvesting body parts of aborted babies and then haggling over the value of each part with prospective buyers.

Right to Life Interior, a pro-life organization in Fairbanks, estimated nearly 150 people turned out to peacefully protest in that city.

In Anchorage an estimated 200 pro-life advocates gathered outside the Planned Parenthood clinic at 4001 East Lake Otis Parkway. It was the second time in less than a month that Anchorage residents called for defunding Planned Parenthood. In late July a rally in Town Square drew about 100 protesters and included speeches by State Senator Mike Dunleavy, Anchorage radio host Bernadette Wilson and former State Senator Fred Dyson. A number of Catholics were among the crowd including Dominican priest Father Mark Francis from Holy Family Cathedral and local parishioners. Speakers urged attendees to contact their legislators to defund Planned Parenthood in Alaska and across the nation.

The series of undercover videos have ignited fierce debate about whether tax payers should have to fund such an organization. Even long-time abortion rights advocates like Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton have called the videos disturbing.

The first video from the Center for Medical Progress shows a top Planned Parenthood executive musing about how she “crushes” certain parts of the baby in order to get valuable organs intact.

The stark revelations have pushed many long-time pro-life Americans to speak out against Planned Parenthood for the first time.

Just before the Aug. 22 gathering in Anchorage local organizer, Jane McCoy, sent out an email urging Alaskans to turn out for the peaceful protest.

“Planned Parenthood has been the largest abortion provider in our country for decades, but the extent of their perverse inhumanity toward these tiniest of humans was not fully understood until the recent release of videos exposing their exploitation of these innocents through the dissection and harvesting of their precious organs for profit,” she stated in an email promoting the protest.
